About the take-home pay calculator

Gross pay is the number on the offer letter; take-home pay is the number that actually lands in your account, and the two can differ by a third or more. The gap is tax and deductions, and understanding it is the difference between a budget that works and one that keeps going wrong.

Income tax usually takes the largest bite, but it rarely applies as a single flat rate. Most systems are progressive: the first slice of income is taxed lightly or not at all, and higher slices are taxed more. Because of that, quoting one "average" rate is a simplification. This calculator uses a single rate you supply, which is fine for a rough picture but not a substitute for a payroll estimate.

Alongside income tax sit the social or payroll taxes that fund pensions, health care or unemployment schemes. These are often split between employer and employee, and only the employee's share shows on your payslip. It is worth checking, because a role with a higher salary but heavier social contributions can net less than it appears.

Then come the smaller deductions: pension contributions, health insurance premiums, union dues, charitable giving. Some reduce your taxable income, so a dollar into a pension may cost less than a dollar of take-home. Others, like a plain loan repayment, do not. The order in which deductions apply changes the arithmetic, which is why a precise payroll system is more accurate than any single-rate estimate.

Treat this as a planning tool to estimate a realistic lifestyle budget from a gross figure. For exact withholding, use your employer's payroll calculation or a country-specific tax table. This is not tax advice.

This calculator returns estimates for general information only. It is not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and it cannot replace guidance from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances. Figures such as loan payments, investment growth and retirement projections are simplified models based on the inputs and assumptions you provide, not guarantees of future results.
