About the hourly to salary calculator
Working from an hourly rate to an annual salary is more subtle than multiplying by two thousand and eighty, because very few people work exactly forty hours for exactly fifty-two weeks. Holidays, unpaid leave and regular overtime all move the total, and for hourly workers those variations are real money rather than a rounding detail.
The key is to be honest about weeks worked. A full-time job with four weeks of unpaid leave is really forty-eight working weeks, not fifty-two. Part-time and seasonal roles swing even more. Multiply your true weekly hours by your true working weeks and you get a figure that reflects your actual year rather than a nominal one.
Overtime deserves separate treatment. Most hourly roles pay a premium — commonly one-and-a-half times the base rate — for hours beyond a threshold. If you routinely work ten extra hours a week, that premium can add thousands to the annual total, and it is the difference between a livable wage and a tight one. The calculator lets you fold regular overtime in so the annual number is not flattering you.
Remember that hourly income is inherently less predictable than a salary. A quiet month means fewer hours and a smaller cheque, with no safety net unless the employer guarantees a minimum. That variability is a genuine cost even when the headline rate looks generous.
Use the annual figure to compare an hourly job against a salaried one on level terms, and to sanity-check whether a rate can support your budget. Figures are gross and exclude tax and deductions. This is an estimate for planning, not tax or financial advice.
This calculator returns estimates for general information only. It is not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and it cannot replace guidance from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances. Figures such as loan payments, investment growth and retirement projections are simplified models based on the inputs and assumptions you provide, not guarantees of future results.
Common questions
How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by the hours worked each week, then by the number of weeks worked per year. A full-time job at forty hours a week for fifty-two weeks is two thousand and eighty hours, so twenty dollars an hour is about forty-one thousand six hundred a year before tax.
Should I use fifty-two weeks?
Only if you are paid for every week. If you get unpaid holiday or the job is seasonal, use the number of weeks you actually work, otherwise you will overstate the annual figure. Comparing two jobs on realistic weeks, rather than on the theoretical maximum, usually changes which one pays more.
Does this figure include overtime and bonuses?
No — it converts a base rate into a base salary. Overtime, shift premiums, tips and bonuses are additional and often irregular, so it is safer to plan your budget on the base figure and treat extras as a buffer rather than as income you can rely on.
