About the hourly rate comparison calculator

Hourly work has a hidden variable: not every hour you spend earning is an hour you are paid for. Commuting, unpaid prep, mandatory training and the time spent travelling between jobs are all part of the job's real cost, and they push the effective rate below the headline one. Two workers paid the same rate can end up earning very different amounts per real hour. The gap widens with the unpaid time. A role at twenty-five dollars for forty paid hours with five hours of unpaid travel pays an effective twenty-two for each hour of your life it consumes. A role at twenty-eight with ten unpaid hours pays under twenty-three. The nominally higher rate can be the worse deal once both are measured honestly. This matters most when choosing between shifts, employers or gig platforms. A platform that pays more per task but makes you wait unpaid between jobs can pay less per hour overall. Likewise a job with a long commute and a modest rate can be beaten by a nearby job offering less, because the commute is unpaid and its cost comes out of your pocket. This calculator compares two hourly jobs on both the paid rate and the effective rate after unpaid hours, and shows weekly and yearly pay. It ignores tax, benefits and travel expenses paid out of pocket, so the true differences are often larger than shown. Use the effective rate — not the advertised one — to decide which job actually pays more.
