Whether it is a daily commute or a long road trip, fuel is a cost that is easy to underestimate and easy to calculate. Distance divided by efficiency gives the fuel you need; multiply by the price per gallon and you have the cost. It is one of the most predictable expenses on a journey.

Efficiency is where the estimate lives or dies. The figure printed by the manufacturer is measured under ideal conditions; real-world driving is lower, often by fifteen to twenty-five per cent. Cold weather, air conditioning, roof racks, city stop-start traffic and a heavy right foot all drag the number down. Using a slightly pessimistic value for efficiency gives a safer budget.

Speed matters more than most drivers expect. Fuel consumption rises steeply above about sixty miles per hour because aerodynamic drag grows with the square of speed. Easing off by ten miles per hour on a long motorway run can cut fuel use noticeably, which on a big trip is real money.

The per-mile and per-person figures are the ones that make the cost tangible. Cost per mile lets you compare driving against alternatives; the per-person figure is the honest basis for splitting a shared journey. Only fuel is included here — wear, servicing, insurance and depreciation add to the true cost of driving a mile, but they are not fuel and so stay out of a fuel calculation.

For budgeting, round up. Arriving at a destination knowing the fuel cost does not exceed your estimate is worth more than the pennies saved by being precise. Use this tool to plan a trip or to settle up fairly when costs are shared. It is a straightforward estimate and does not include tolls, parking or vehicle wear.
