About the tip calculator
Tipping is a small calculation with an outsized social weight, and getting it wrong in either direction is awkward. The arithmetic is easy once the percentage is chosen; the harder part is knowing what percentage is appropriate and whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount.
Custom varies enormously by country and by service. In the United States, restaurant tips of fifteen to twenty per cent are the norm, with twenty per cent now common for good service in many cities. Elsewhere the system is different: in much of Europe a service charge is included, and tipping is a small rounding-up rather than a percentage. Always check whether a gratuity has already been added, especially for large parties, so you are not tipping twice.
On the base, most guidance says to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since you are rewarding service rather than the sales tax the restaurant merely collects on the government's behalf. In practice many people simply tip on the total for round numbers, and the difference is small. If in doubt, tipping on the post-tax total is generous and never wrong.
Splitting is where a simple bill gets complicated. Splitting evenly is fastest and fine when everyone ate similarly. When the table ordered very differently, splitting by what each person ordered is fairer, but harder to track. This calculator handles the even split and shows the per-person amount including tip, which is usually the number you actually need to settle up.
Rounding up to a whole dollar is a small kindness that makes the maths easier and the payment tidier, which is why the calculator offers it. A good tip is fair to the worker and simple for you; if a number feels fiddly, round upward.
This tool is a straightforward calculator for a common situation. It does not account for local tipping laws or automatic service charges, so confirm the local norm before you pay.
This calculator returns estimates for general information only. It is not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and it cannot replace guidance from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances. Figures such as loan payments, investment growth and retirement projections are simplified models based on the inputs and assumptions you provide, not guarantees of future results.
