About the fuel cost per mile calculator
The cost of fuel per mile is the number that turns driving into a price you can actually see. It is simply the fuel price divided by the car's fuel economy, and once you know it, every trip has a fuel cost: a commute of twenty miles a day, a two-hundred-mile weekend, a delivery route. It also makes the value of a more efficient car, or of driving more gently, concrete rather than theoretical. Fuel economy changes the answer more than fuel price usually does. Because the cost is divided by miles per gallon, improving economy from twenty to thirty mpg cuts the cost per mile by a third — a far bigger effect than a small change in pump price. That is why small efficiency gains, from tyres, load, speed and smooth driving, move the annual figure noticeably. Distance is the multiplier. A low cost per mile still becomes a large annual bill at high mileage, and a modest reduction in miles driven cuts the total directly. For anyone comparing two homes, two cars or two routes, the fuel cost per mile times the extra distance gives the fuel penalty of each choice, which is often overlooked next to rent or price. This calculator shows the fuel cost per mile, per hundred miles, per month and per year from your own figures. It counts fuel only, not insurance, maintenance and depreciation, which typically add more than fuel to the true running cost. Treat it as the fuel slice of your motoring budget, and use the per-mile figure whenever you want to price a journey before you take it.
