About the bonus tax calculator

A bonus is taxed as ordinary income, but it often feels different because employers withhold it at a different rate from your regular pay. Many use a flat percentage for supplemental wages, which can be higher or lower than your true marginal rate, so the first paycheck after a bonus can look alarming — or surprisingly generous. The withholding is not the final tax; the annual return sorts the difference out. The right way to estimate what you keep is your marginal rate, not your average rate. A bonus sits on top of your salary, so it is taxed at the highest rate you already pay. If your last dollar of salary is taxed at thirty-two per cent, so is most of the bonus. Using your overall average rate instead understates the tax and leads to an unpleasant surprise at filing time. Deductions add a second layer. Pension contributions, social insurance and other payroll items often apply to bonuses too, so the gap between gross and net can be larger than the tax alone suggests. In some countries bonuses may be taxed slightly differently or fall into a separate regime, which is why no single percentage fits everyone. This calculator estimates tax at your marginal rate plus other deductions and shows the take-home amount. It is a planning tool, not a tax return: the exact figure depends on your full-year income, your allowances and your country's rules. Use the result to budget with the net number rather than the headline, and confirm the rest with a tax professional or your payroll department.

This calculator returns estimates for general information only. It is not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and it cannot replace guidance from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances. Figures such as loan payments, investment growth and retirement projections are simplified models based on the inputs and assumptions you provide, not guarantees of future results.
