About the vacation budget calculator
Trip costs split into two kinds, and knowing which is which makes budgeting far easier. The fixed part is what you pay once — flights and travel insurance — and it scales with the number of travellers but not with the length of the stay. The variable part covers every day you are away — accommodation, food, activities and local transport — and it grows with every extra night. The two behave differently when you extend a trip. That difference decides whether staying longer is cheap or expensive. Once you have paid to fly somewhere, each additional day costs only its own daily expenses, so the marginal cost of a longer trip is usually much lower than the average cost per day. This is why long trips often feel better value than short ones: the expensive fixed part is spread across more days. Accommodation is the number worth attacking first, because it is both large and negotiable. A cheaper area, an apartment with a kitchen or a slightly longer stay in one place can cut the daily rate sharply, and cooking some meals turns the food line from a fixed cost into a choice. Activities, by contrast, are easy to trim without hurting the trip — pick the two or three that matter and let the rest go. This calculator adds the main categories and shows the total, the cost per person and the cost per person per day. It assumes a nightly accommodation pattern and daily spending you supply, and leaves out shopping, tips and currency fees. Use it before you book to see what the trip really costs, then adjust a single line and watch the total change.
