About the net worth calculator
Net worth is the single clearest number in personal finance: everything you own minus everything you owe. It is a snapshot rather than a story, but tracking it over time tells you whether you are moving forward faster than your debts.
Assets are the things of value you could in principle convert to cash — bank balances, investments, retirement accounts, the market value of property and vehicles. Liabilities are what you owe — mortgages, car loans, student debt, credit-card balances. Subtract the second from the first and you have your net worth, which can quite reasonably be negative early on. A new graduate with student loans and little savings is not failing; they are simply at the start of the curve.
Where people go wrong is the valuation of assets. Use current market value, not what you paid. A car loses value every year; a house may gain or lose. Counting an expensive possession at its purchase price flatters the picture and hides reality. If in doubt, use a conservative estimate, because the goal is a useful number, not a flattering one.
Net worth is also not the same as cash flow. You can have a healthy net worth tied up in a house and still feel broke, because the equity is not spendable without selling or borrowing. That is why breaking out liquid assets matters: it shows what you could actually reach in an emergency.
The most useful habit is a regular check, once a quarter or twice a year, using the same categories each time so the trend is comparable. The absolute number matters less than the direction and the pace. Paying down debt and adding to investments both raise net worth, which is why the two often go together.
This calculator is a personal balance-sheet estimate for your own tracking, not financial advice.
This calculator returns estimates for general information only. It is not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and it cannot replace guidance from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances. Figures such as loan payments, investment growth and retirement projections are simplified models based on the inputs and assumptions you provide, not guarantees of future results.
