About the car affordability calculator

A car is one of the largest purchases most people make, and one of the most misunderstood, because the sticker price is only part of the story. What you actually pay each month includes the loan payment, insurance, fuel, maintenance and — the number nobody likes to calculate — depreciation.

A common guideline is to keep the total cost of car ownership under about fifteen to twenty per cent of gross monthly income. That includes everything, not just the payment. A car you can "afford" on the payment alone can quietly become unaffordable once insurance for a young driver or a thirsty engine is added.

This calculator starts from income, sets a payment ceiling, and works backward through your rate and term to a loan amount, then adds your down payment and trade-in to give a realistic price. It also estimates running costs, so the all-in monthly figure is closer to the truth than the loan payment alone.

Two traps deserve a warning. The first is the long loan. Stretching to eighty-four months lowers the monthly figure but leaves you owing more than the car is worth for years, a condition known as being underwater, so a crash or a change of circumstances becomes a financial disaster rather than an inconvenience. The second is rolling negative equity from an old car into a new loan, which hides a past mistake inside a bigger one.

Buy used where you can. Depreciation is steepest in the first years, so a two- or three-year-old car lets someone else absorb the worst of it. Pay in cash if you can, or keep the loan short, and budget for maintenance as a regular cost rather than a surprise.

This tool offers a planning estimate, not financial advice; confirm loan terms with your lender and insurance quotes with your provider.

This calculator returns estimates for general information only. It is not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and it cannot replace guidance from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances. Figures such as loan payments, investment growth and retirement projections are simplified models based on the inputs and assumptions you provide, not guarantees of future results.
