About the savings rate calculator

Your savings rate is the share of your take-home pay you keep rather than spend, and it is the single clearest measure of financial progress. Income alone says little: two people earning the same can be decades apart in security because one keeps ten per cent and the other thirty. The rate you control directly is the one you can move, and moving it changes outcomes faster than almost anything else you can do. The reason a high rate matters so much is that it works twice. Every dollar you keep is a dollar not spent, which lowers the lifestyle you must fund in retirement, and it is also a dollar invested, which grows and funds that retirement. Saving thirty per cent instead of ten builds three times the capital while requiring only two-thirds of the income, because the gap between earning and spending widens from both ends. Where to set the target depends on your goals and timeline. A common benchmark is fifteen to twenty per cent of take-home pay for a comfortable retirement, higher if you started late or want to retire early. The mathematically tidy version of early retirement is that your rate and your working years are tightly linked: saving half your income can cut a career roughly in half. This calculator turns income and monthly saving into a rate and shows what that habit compounds into. It assumes a steady return and no salary growth, which real life rarely offers, so treat the projection as a direction rather than a promise. The number to watch first is the percentage: raise it by one point and rerun the calculator to see the effect over a decade.

This calculator returns estimates for general information only. It is not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and it cannot replace guidance from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances. Figures such as loan payments, investment growth and retirement projections are simplified models based on the inputs and assumptions you provide, not guarantees of future results.
