About the investment return (cagr) calculator

Two investments can post the same total return and still be very different propositions, because the years matter. The compound annual growth rate — CAGR for short — flattens the whole journey into a single yearly figure, so a three-year double and a twelve-year double become comparable.

The calculation is simple: divide the final value by the initial value, take the root equal to the number of years, and subtract one. A ten-thousand-dollar stake that became twenty-five thousand over eight years grew about twelve per cent a year. It did not grow twelve per cent every year, of course. Some years it jumped, some it fell. CAGR is an average, and averages hide the turbulence, but they are the fairest single number for comparing investments held for different lengths of time.

Compound annual growth is also the honest yardstick for your own results. A fund advertising a high headline return may date from a lucky starting point; a CAGR over a long stretch is harder to dress up. Pair it with the rule of seventy-two, which estimates how long money takes to double: divide seventy-two by the growth rate and you get an approximate doubling time.

There are limits worth respecting. CAGR assumes a clean start and end with no money added or withdrawn in between; regular deposits need a different measure. It ignores fees, taxes and dividends unless you have folded them in. And a high CAGR over a short period is close to noise. Use it to compare like with like, not to predict the future.
