About the emergency fund calculator
An emergency fund is the buffer between a bad month and a financial spiral. Its job is to absorb the shocks that life reliably delivers — a job loss, a car repair, a medical bill — without forcing you into credit-card debt or selling long-term investments at the worst possible moment.
The usual advice is three to six months of essential expenses. The right number for you depends on how exposed you are. A two-income household with secure jobs and no dependants can sit comfortably at three months. A single earner in a volatile industry, or anyone supporting a family on one salary, should aim higher. Freelancers and business owners often hold a year or more, because their income is lumpy by design.
Note the word essential. Count rent or mortgage, utilities, food, transport, insurance and minimum debt payments. Leave out holidays, dining out and subscriptions — the fund exists to keep the lights on, not to preserve your lifestyle. Oversizing the target to include discretionary spending makes it feel unreachable and stalls the habit.
Keep the money somewhere boring, safe and quick to reach: a separate savings account you can touch within a day or two. It should not be in stocks, where a market fall could coincide with the emergency, and it should be slightly out of sight so it does not drift into everyday spending.
Once funded, the money just sits there earning little. That is the point — you are buying peace of mind, not a return. Rebuild the fund after each use and revisit the target whenever your expenses change. This tool offers planning estimates only, not financial advice.
This calculator returns estimates for general information only. It is not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and it cannot replace guidance from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances. Figures such as loan payments, investment growth and retirement projections are simplified models based on the inputs and assumptions you provide, not guarantees of future results.
