About the college savings calculator
Education costs rise faster than general prices, which means a fund built for today's tuition almost never covers tomorrow's. The planning problem has two moving parts pulling in opposite directions: your savings grow at an investment return, while the bill grows at education inflation. When the second outpaces the first, a gap appears that widens every year you wait to start. Starting early is the strongest lever, because a long horizon lets compounding do most of the work. Contributions made when a child is young enjoy a decade or more of growth, while the same total saved in the last few years arrives almost uninvested. The earliest payments are worth several times the latest ones, which is why a small monthly amount from birth usually beats a large amount from fourteen. Tax-advantaged accounts change the arithmetic further. In many countries a dedicated education account lets the money grow tax-free when used for qualified costs, effectively raising the return without raising the risk. The trade-off is that withdrawing for non-education purposes can trigger taxes and penalties, so the account is best for money you are confident is destined for study. This calculator projects your fund and the future bill, then shows the gap and what it would take to close it monthly. It assumes steady contributions, a fixed return and a constant inflation rate, and coarse numbers for a four-year degree. Treat the result as an early warning system rather than a precise forecast, and revisit it every year as returns and costs become clearer.
This calculator returns estimates for general information only. It is not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and it cannot replace guidance from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances. Figures such as loan payments, investment growth and retirement projections are simplified models based on the inputs and assumptions you provide, not guarantees of future results.
