About the cost of goods sold calculator

Cost of goods sold, or COGS, is the direct cost of the stock a business actually sold during a period. It is the first and largest deduction from revenue on the way to profit, and getting it right is essential for knowing whether a product line is genuinely making money.

The calculation is a story about inventory. Start with what you had at the beginning of the period, add everything you bought, then subtract what is left at the end. What disappeared in between is what you sold. This is why stock-taking matters: the closing figure directly determines COGS, and COGS directly determines profit. Count generously and profit looks better than it is; count accurately and you get the truth.

COGS includes only the costs that go directly into the goods — materials, purchase price, freight in, direct labour in some cases. It excludes overheads such as rent, marketing and admin, which are handled separately. Mixing the two distorts both numbers and makes the margin meaningless.

Subtract COGS from revenue and you have gross profit, which is the money available to cover everything else. Gross margin, the percentage, tells you the pricing power of the business. A high margin leaves room to fund growth; a low one means volume must carry the day and there is little cushion when costs rise.

Watch the trend over several periods rather than a single figure. A rising COGS as a share of revenue can signal supplier increases, waste, theft, or a shift toward cheaper products that sell at lower margins. Catching that early is worth more than any single month's report.

This calculator gives the standard COGS formula for planning. Accounting rules on inventory valuation and period timing vary, so rely on your accountant for official figures. This is not accounting or tax advice.

This calculator returns estimates for general information only. Figures such as loan payments, investment growth and retirement projections are simplified models based on the inputs and assumptions you provide, not guarantees of future results.
