About the car payment calculator
A car loan is the second-largest debt most households carry, and the monthly payment is the number everyone negotiates around. Yet the payment is an output, not an input: it falls out of four things — how much you finance, the interest rate, the term, and any fees rolled in. Understand those and the payment stops being mysterious. The amount financed is the price plus tax and fees, minus whatever you put down or trade in. That is the figure interest is charged on, so a larger down payment cuts both the payment and the interest. A trade-in behaves exactly like cash, provided its value is real rather than inflated into the new car's price — dealerships sometimes pay above market for a trade and make it back on the sale, so compare the trade offer and the car price separately. Term length is the quiet trap. Stretching from sixty to eighty-four months can drop the payment by a fifth, which feels like relief, but you pay interest for two more years and stay underwater on the loan for longer, meaning the car is worth less than you owe if you sell early. A rule of thumb is to keep car loans at five years or less and to put down at least twenty per cent. Interest rate is set by your credit, the lender and the age of the vehicle. New cars usually attract lower rates than used ones, and promotional rates are sometimes offered in place of a cash rebate — it is worth calculating which is worth more rather than assuming. Rates are also quoted as an APR, which folds in some fees, so a lower headline rate with big fees can cost more. This calculator shows the payment, the total interest and the total outlay so you can see the whole picture, not just the monthly figure. The payment is an estimate based on the rate and term you enter; the final contract may include fees, insurance or add-ons that change the numbers, so treat the result as a planning figure rather than a quote.
This calculator returns estimates for general information only. It is not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and it cannot replace guidance from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances. Figures such as loan payments, investment growth and retirement projections are simplified models based on the inputs and assumptions you provide, not guarantees of future results.
